Call For Research Participants: Gender Presentation In The Workplace

The way we present our gender to the world around us can have big effects on how people treat us, but so far, there isn’t much research on how gender nonconformity shapes our work lives. Of course, plenty of people have stories to tell, and my friend Alison Fogarty is looking for research participants for her dissertation.

Alison is looking for people whose gender falls outside the heteronormative definitions AND people who have gender-nonconforming co-workers. If you fit into either of these groups, you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, you’re a legal adult, and you’d like to help her do some groundbreaking research, please see the info below. And please pass this along to anyone who might want to participate or cross-post it. The more we can share this, the better Alison’s research will be. (You can also post just one of these. They’re separated by a horizontal line to make it easier to see where one ends and the other starts.)

Are you gender nonconforming? Is your gender non-binary? Do you have a gender presentation that defies societal expectations and assumptions regarding maleness and femaleness.

Do you identify as a masculine woman, butch, boi, stud, feminine or effeminate man, transgender, transsexual, genderqueer, genderless, agender, androgyne, ambigendered, bi-gendered, two-spirit, third gendered, multi-gendered, gender-blender, or gender-bender?

If the answer is yes to any of these questions, you may qualify to participate in a study that examines transsexual and genderqueer discrimination in the workplace.  You must also live and work in the San Francisco Bay Area and be at least 18 years of age.

My name is Alison Fogarty and I’m a queer trans ally.  I am a doctoral student in sociology at Stanford University working on my dissertation, which examines gender-based workplace discrimination.  I am specifically exploring how the workplace experiences of gender nonconforming individuals compare to those of gender conforming individuals.  This study intends to bring awareness to transphobia and gender based discrimination in the workplace

If you’d like to participate, I will interview you for about an hour and will ask questions about your employment history and experiences with discrimination. Your participation and identifying information will remain confidential.  You will be paid $50 cash.  Payments may only be made to U.S. citizens, legal resident aliens, or those who have a work eligible visa.

Please contact me at afogarty@stanford.edu or 520-481-6885 if you’d like additional information or if you want to participate. You can find more information about the work I do at my website, www.ackfogarty.com
